Using Trivia for Post Prom Parties

Using Trivia for Post Prom Parties

Prom Nights are big big business. Every summer across the globe young adult’s book limousines, hire tuxedos and spend a fortune getting ready for what, at the time, is the biggest night of their lives. Months of planning, years of anticipation and weeks of excitement go into to a Prom Night. Sometimes people want the night to go on and on, and the post-prom night party occasion as grown over recent years into an event as important as the Prom itself. What you need to remember here is one simple thing….Prom nights are about fun. Only the minority see Prom night as a chance to get drunk and sneak off from beers and go wild. The majority of people just want a good time and as a trivia host you could provide that. After the stress of the planning and preparation that goes into Prom, the students just want to unwind and a good game of Trivia has been proven to provide just that…

But hold your horses a little. If you think a post-prom party trivia event is simple, easy work then you have another thing coming? If you are used to hosting general knowledge trivia with pen and paper then you need to start thinking outside of the box. The students will be sick to the back teeth of pens and paper and anything that feels like an exam will feel like the school years they are celebrating the end of. So you need to treat this trivia event as something unique….

The post-prom party trivia occasions needs to be fun, memorable and creative and with the modern technology available to use as a trivia host means you can give the customers what they want. This could fall into two camps….

You could be booked as a side attraction. Some post-prom parties are huge in massive venues and halls and there are often a lot going on…DJ’s, entertainers, magicians, people drawing caricatures.  So you may be one of many. This changes your approach. If you are stuck in the corner as an attraction then there are a few options. Firstly, you need quick, short and fun games, possibly with high energy and low brain power required. Have you read my post on Clobber, the unique buzzer based system that involves wearing a hard hat and smashing each other with mallets? If not I suggest you do then you will see how that is perfect for post prom party trivia. Wireless game buzzers, trivia cubes (all of which DigiGames can help you with) will all be appealing, suitable and fun. Set up small games so you need 4-5 players to get going and with a little audience area you can help make your trivia the main fun for all.

But it also good be an occasion where you are booked to provide 30-60 minutes of trivia based entertainment for all in attendance. Everyone needs to be involved so this gives you a chance to use audience polling and interactive buzzers. Some of the systems that DigiGames provide for example cover up to a 1000 players so you can get everyone involved.

  • Proven success formats:
  • Name that tune
  • Name that video
  • Battle of the Sexes
  • Prom King against Prom Queen trivia
  • Prom King plus male team against Prom Queen and female team

Note the mention of the prom king and queen above.  These should be handled like a bride and groom at a wedding, in that these are generally the main focus guests present.

What you have to make sure though is that the trivia is fun and interesting. No academic trivia, no serious general knowledge just fun, quirky and relevant questions people will want to answer. Maybe sneak a look at the year book and ask some fun questions from that or have a word with teachers and staff about funny instances that have happened or they can recall about the students school experience.

In terms of format why not use something they know and are going to remember? Make use of custom game show systems which can replicate what they will have seen on TV and give them an experience to write home about. Remember if you make it fun for them, then they will tell their friends who will then look to book you when it is their Post Prom Party! (These things get competitive you know with everyone who is organizing a party wanting the best possible one….the party EVERYONE talks about).

There are other post prom party ideas you can do, but in essence, as we begin to look further into the uses for Trivia we begin to see how it can be adapted and used on any occasions. Contact school prom organizing committees and they can usually put you in touch with post-prom organizers. After all, you may have invested money in equipment and buzzers etc for other purposes so you will want to find every possible use to make your business grow using them and this is THE perfect opportunity.
